does killing things all at once give you less drops than killing them one by one?

I always had this question in mind, as from what I observe I get more drops killing things one by one that killing them all at once

I don't know about you... but anything that you kill in DoA drops stuff you can farm outside of Boreal Station in NM, the only reason I'm there is for the slight chance of gem drops, and the end chests of course.

Yes And No, its only partially true, you do get more killing one by one when solo,like vaettir's, because the game finds it hard to allocate and design the weapon to drop all at once, but in teams it is unaffected because the script is already there for the drop allocation to different players

The loot nerf was implemented by imposing a rate of kill. Kill everything one at a time with 20-30 saeconds between kills and you will get a drop off of near every kill. Take them out all at once and you will get precious little.

Anyone who doesn't believe it simply hasn't bothered to try it, it's not hard to do, anyone can test this, all you have to do is bother. Unfortunately there are too many people like Horace on forums that choose what to believe based on the lies ANet feed them.

This is also true with full parties, try doing Urgoz HM in under 40 mins and see how empty everyone's inventory is.

In any doubt? Ignore opinion and Just try it.

Kill two group of enemies, one group with massive AOE, and an identical group with something that kills them one at a time with 20 seconds between each, and definitely notice that you'll have less drops from the AoE group. This is a fact.

The difference is that the AoE group could be killed a whole lot faster, meaning more runs per hours, meaning more profit over time (the only reason why you're farming in the first place is to get stuff faster than average).

If you're trying to maximize your farming, either do some serious scientific experimentation (and be prepared to do it again if your build gets nerfed) or pick up a build from someone else's work.

Yes. It's rate of kill. There's a loot cap of $X/sec. If the merch value of your drops exceeds that cap, you won't receive any more non-exempt drops until enough time has passed that you are under the cap.

I consider Link 1 in Cthon's post above to be the most useful.

It proves that killing stuff slowly gives more drops.

But it also shows that you may STILL get the best profit/hour by killing everything at once. (You get less drops per run... but if the number of runs/kills per hour is high enough, it will still end up more profitable).

When I do Urgoz with my guild we kill everything in the way, no running (we don't even have any sins in the guild!). Some runs take 40ish minutes, some 60ish minutes, you get about twice the drops in the 60ish min runs. Back in the early days of Urgoz when 90+ mins were the norm, before the loot nerf that wasn't supposed to affect full parties, you needed to bring several salvage kits along with you.

The game engine has no difficulty assigning simultaneous drops in large quantities, which you would know if you played before the so-called loot scaling update. Here is an illustration of drops before rate of kill was added.

Obviously this is an old build. Some of the skills are nerfed, and so are the drops. Every single foe in that shot dropped something. Multiple simultaneous deaths were achieved using this build. Before you ask, Apply/Screaming were for stragglers.

As a rough guide....

Kill things slowly then the (one) drop from each monster goes into the loot allocation code and is evenly distributed between the party members in range.

Kill things to quickly and then one drop from each designated mob goes into the loot allocation code. Commonly known as the RoK/AoE nerf/bug - Anet have never confirmed if this is a deliberated nerf or just a really bad piece of coding that they can't/refuse to correct.

Bear in mind that a "mob" could be a single monster or any number of.

This is all easy to prove and has been demonstrated many, many times.

Yes, you get fewer drops if you kill a group simultaneously than if you stagger the kills.

Possible drops and chest contents are also pre-determined on zone. (As demonstrated by zone synching and chest-contains-2-elitetomes experiments/observations).

so for raptor farming (With W/N), its prolly best only to do it when event items are dropping?

Also, does having a party full of leechers help? or am I better of solo with raptors? (when it comes to reg farming, when event items ARENT dropping).

Leechers don't help unless they are actually leeching drops. If they are grayed out on the party list, pretend like they aren't there.

Dropping stuff en mass gets you less loot per mob than killing that same group one at a time, but it's generally agreed-upon that you can AoE more stuff down faster and net more drops that way than by slow kills.
